Did Google Unleash Additional Googlebots?
Apparently, Google has begun using another spider in their
scanning and indexing of web sites. News of a second
Googlebot was discovered by a number of site owners
who, while studying their site logs, noticed two Google
spiders; with different IP address ranges; visited and
scanned their respective sites.

News of the additional Googlebot was first noticed on the
DigitalPoint forums, posted by digitalpoint himself. In his
post, digital noticed that two Googlebots had visited his site
and that each one had different IP addresses:
"The normal one:
66.249.64.47 - - [15/Sep/2004:18:59:12 -0700] "GET
/robots.txt HTTP/1.0" 404 1227 "-" "Googlebot/2.1
(+http://www.google.com/bot.html)"
and also this one:
66.249.66.129 - - [15/Sep/2004:18:12:51 -0700] "GET /
HTTP/1.1" 200 38358 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible;
Googlebot/2.1; +http://www.google.com/bot.html)"
Aside from the slightly different user agent, it's also HTTP
1.1. The IP address it uses is an IP block is normally just
used for Mediapartners (AdSense spider), but it's spidering
a site without any AdSense."
Once this thread was launched,
scores of other posters shared their
encounters with the second
Googlebot. A DigitalPoint member
named Redleg also noticed several
visits from the new spider and also
recorded the IP ranges of the new
visitors, "Don't remember the exact IP
addresses (about 15-20 of them) but here's the IP ranges:
66.249.78.* 66.249.64.* 66.249.79.*…"
Many who checked their server logs noticed a number of
visits from both Googlebots, with various IP ranges. Not
only were there numerous visits, but also each bot
performed a different kind of crawl than its "partner". Over
at the WebmasterWorld forums, a poster named Gomer
noticed that one bot performed a complete site crawl while
the other did more of a surface-type crawl. According to
Gomer:
"The 66.249.64.X series was requesting pages that were
fully indexed i.e., they have a page title and description.
The 66.249.65.X series was requesting pages that were
only partially indexed… In my case, the 66.249.65.X were
pages that exist on my server but I am trying to get
Googlebot to stop indexing."
As the realization of an additional Googlebot set in,
speculation began concerning the motive of having two
bots performing site scans. Because Google likes to keep
the business concerning their search index, spiders, and
anything having to with their search engine under tight
wraps, educated guesses are all that can be done.
Brett Tabke posted an interesting
thought concerning Google's extensive
crawling, "looks like "panic" based
spidering… as if an index needs to be
rebuilt from the ground up in a short
time period (aka: the old index didn't
work)." Another member believed
these scans are apart of the PR
re-calculation for the next PageRank
update. Another poster, idoc, had
also had an intriguing look at Google actions:
"I expect a lot of cloaking and redirect sites will be
dropped soon from these new bot IPs and this crawl. It's
what I had in mind in the post about hijacks when I said I
think Google is on it. They have been asking for file paths
and filenames with extensions I have never used before. I
am hopeful anyway."
Longtime WMW poster claus suggested that these events
might be because Google is preparing a new datacenter,
while others thought the index may contain a glitch.
However, Liane, in agreeing with Brett about these deep
crawls being out of the ordinary. She stated, "Something
must be causing this feeding frenzy and it wouldn't surprise
me if there was a glitch with the index. Google went nuts
every day this past week on my site, but in the last 24
hours… only one hit. Never had that before. Not that I can
remember anyway… I smell a "major" update in the
offing... once they get things sorted."
As it stands, the reasons behind Google's scanning efforts
are unknown. The only things that are certain is they are
using more than one crawler and that at least one of them
performs a complete site scan. Is Google repopulating their
index, or are they hunting out cloaked/doorway pages? Or
are they finally getting around to doing another PR update?

What with all the buzz surrounding e-commerce lately you
probably expect the kids down the street to be hawking
homemade lemonade over the web. And really why not?
Although larger enterprises require custom e-commerce
solutions to meet their demands, for the small business
owner it's never been easier to set up cyber-shop.
With a little planning and some good web-based tools you
too can be the next new kid on the e-commerce block.
Presumably you've already got a promotional website up and
running - tailored to meet your customers inquiries and service
needs while promoting your products in a clear and concise
manner. All you need now is one of those plug-and-play style
solutions you keep reading about in all the magazines. Well,
first you need to know one or two things about doing business
over the internet.
When you set up shop on the web you effectively set up shop
across at least all fifty states, if not around the world. From
a marketing perspective that probably sounds great. But from the
tax angle it's a huge headache. Calculating the various state
and county taxes in accordance with the different regulations
that your now national audience brings into each and every
online transaction. Naturally your out-of-state customers are
going to expect their products delivered to their doors so you
won't want to put down the calculator until you've figured out
the shipping costs for the varying weights and distances of
those orders. Of course, once you've finally got it all totaled
up don't hit the enter key on that cash register because doing
business online is similar to doing business through mail order
and the law says that you can't collect payment until the
product has shipped.
Luckily all these calculations are just what computers were made
for. So the only thing you need to do is choose from amongst the
dozens of different tax, shipping and payment processing
packages -- keeping in mind that they're compatible with each
other and supported by your ISP. That kid with the lemonade
stand is beginning to look like some kind of prodigy
wouldn't you say?
The truth is that e-commerce can be a vastly complicated
undertaking but it doesn't have to be. A number of companies
begun to offer web-based solutions which vastly simplify the
process. The current leaders in the field are Intershop ePages,
iCat Commerce Online

All provide a fast, cheap entry into e-commerce. They provide
varying degrees of customization options and statistical
analysis tools both of which are important to maintain and
grow your product identity along with sales.
How secure is all of this? Technically speaking exchanging
credit card information over the internet is far safer than
doing so in a phone conversation for the simple reason that
electronic transfers are encrypted and phone conversations are
not. A long time ago as we measure time online, back in 1995
Netscape introduced SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) into its
Navigator web browser. SSL is an encryption technology that
scrambles messages in such a way that only the recipient can
unscramble them. To get SSL working requires an "authentication
certificate". The certificate acts as an electronic passport
providing you with a unique,
verifiable identity. In addition to SSL many groups today have
adopted the new SET (Secure Electronic Transaction) standard
which contains extra security measures and antifraud
technologies. If you are hosting your e-commerce shop through a
third party such as the ones mentioned above you will most
likely be using their certificates and the only thing you
need to know is that between SSL and SET credit card
transactions don't get much safer than this.
Working with a web-based solution such as the award winning
Yahoo! Store is so straight forward it makes building that
cardboard juice stand seem complicated. Essentially the only
thing you are responsible is creating the look of the pages and
arranging your inventory -- they take care of all the
complicated backend stuff. Your product details and pricing can
be entered by hand or by uploading from an existing database.
The Yahoo! ordering system supports automatic tax and shipping
calculation and the orders can be sent to you or called up on
demand. Lastly, the system provides you with extensive tracking
tools to keep statistics on your customers' preferences and
needs so all you have to do is call up the reports.
Sounds easy doesn't it? Well you certainly don't have to take my
word for it because both Yahoo and iCat provide guided tours of
their setup processes that are so enjoyable you'll wonder what
all the fuss has been about.

NEW EXALEAD Search Engine
Finally a New Class of search Engine exists
A new European Search Engine that is about to take on
Google in performance and capability.
(November 2 2004) Recently there has appeared a new global search
engine index from the French company Exalead.
Proximity: You can do proximity search using the NEAR operator
(which was supported by Altavista earlier).
Truncation: Using the asterisk (*) as a wild card sign you can
find several versions of the same word in one search
(open* gives you results that include both open, opened, opens,
and opening)
Phonetic search: By activating this function the search engine
will bring up words that sound like the word you type in, even
if you misspell it.
Regular search patterns: These are similar to search expressions
that used in programming languages like PHP and Perl. We do not
know of any other major search engine that has ever supported
this feature.
This is not bad at all, but it doesn't end there. Exalead also
includes other features that exist in other search engines, but
that are not widely used:

At the top would be Google, which snared 46.3 percent of search
queries in November 2005. Almost 2.4 billion searches wound their
way through the Google server farms. Yahoo held its place at second
on this list, with a 23.4 percent share and 1.194 billion queries
received, parsed, and tossed back to the user.
That takes care of the billionaires of search share. MSN Search at
number three picked up 11.4 percent of the November '05 search
market, 583 million queries. AOL Search was tops in single digit
share, 6.9 percent and 350 million searches handled.
MyWay and Ask Jeeves trailed the big four, at fifth and sixth place.
Ask Jeeves owns MyWay and powers its search, so maybe the 2.5
percent and 2.3 percent of search share should be combined for the
two. Nielsen//NetRatings then listed EarthLink (which gets its
results from Google), Dogpile (a metasearch site), Netscape (Google
search results here too), and iWon (Ask Jeeves here) as the last
four on the list.
