57:02 - 13 tracks - 2001 reissue

Delerue composed the music for numerous ' Sons et lumières ' shows during his career. Le Puy du Fou is the only one that has been made available on CD. Symphonic in style with chorus, this score reminds at times The French Revolution, Chouans! and Thibaud the Crusader. However, it is often interrupted or combined with narration and sound effects which have not much interest, unless you saw the show. Since 2004, Le Puy du Fou has completly renewed the musical content by calling on composer Nick Glennie-Smith.

This compilation offers new versions of film music themes composed for the French cinema of the 1960's and the 70's, an extremely fruitful period in Georges Delerue's long career. The transcriptions by the three musicians stick faithfully to the melodic line of the original pieces, while retaining the most suitable material for flute and cello accompaniment.

Quatuor de guitares (Guitars Quartet)

France

CD De Plein vent -Frémeaux et associés FA9504
Quatuor de guitares deVersailles, conducted by Dominique Fanal
57:36 - 9 tracks - 2001
Contains works by Delerue (15:10), Franz Constant and Federico -Torroba

These classical concertos were recorded in 1998. Delerue knew how to handle one guitar in his film music and his concert music as well. How about four guitars? They play here mostly in a syncopated rhythm and seem to fight together against the orchestra instead of dialoguing with it. The resulting climate of tension is much ado for nothing. The Constant work is not more convincing. The very Spanish sounding and vivid Federico-Torroba piece is the winner here.
