An amateur filmmaker during his adolescence,
Montrealer Clément Fontaine has for
many years worked as a journalist, teacher,
translator and writer. In 1994, eager for change,
he decided to turn his main hobby into a living by
starting a mail order outlet dedicated to film
music. It was a first in Canada. This coincided
with the birth of the Delerue Page, the first
bilingual Internet site devoted to the composer of
Jules et Jim and Le Mépris.
Clément Fontaine subsequently reoriented the
business to sound restoration, a new passion that
led him to realise an old dream - of becoming a
record producer. Founded in 2002, the Disques
Cinémusique label promotes European and
Canadian soundtracks.
Clément Fontaine's strong interest in the
output of Georges Delerue dates back to the time
when he started to go to the movies, at the height
of the French Nouvelle Vague in the early 1960s. He
found the original music associated with the images
of directors like Godard, Truffaut and de Broca, to
mention just a few, to be immediately moving and
often seductive. The music's power of
transfiguration and evocation, whether composed for
the small or large screen, still unrecognized by
the Public and most film buffs, continues to
fascinate him to the present day.
