about me

I have a BA in art history (McGill University); a BTh in theology (McGill University); an MLS in library service (McGill University); an MA in the history and philosophy of religion (Concordia University); and a PhD in religious studies (McGill University).

My doctoral work was on the relation between religion and secularity, or modernity, an extremely broad topic. That involved me in the study of popular culture, especially film and television. My post-doctoral research, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and the Donner Foundation, has focused on the study of gender, masculinity in particular. And that, in turn, has required the study of topics such as anthropology, sociology, psychology, ethics, philosophy, history, literature, and even biology. I'm very familiar, in short, with the major scholarly controversies in many fields. I'm in a good position, therefore, to help my clients either avoid or solve methodological and conceptual problems.

Moreover, I've had my own work published. I know from personal experience what it means to be edited by someone else! My doctoral dissertation, Over the Rainbow: The Wizard of Oz as a Secular Myth of America, was published in 1991 by State University of New York Press. My articles and reviews, too, have appeared in publications such as Gender and World Religions, Material History Review, Journal of Popular Culture, Grail, and Catholic New Times.

Most of my clients use the Chicago Manual of Style (University of Chicago) or the MLA Handbook of Style for Writers of Research Papers (Modern Languages Association). Many of them find that modifications must be made, though, because not all forms of information are as easy to cite in footnotes as books and articles. My own research, which requires me to cite such ephemeral sources as television shows and commercials -- has given me enough experience to be both creative and correct in this regard.

Finally, I'm a member of the Editors' Association of Canada (along with the American Academy of Religion, the American Culture Association, and the Popular Culture Association).
