One of the preferred rendez-vous of the Montréal trippeux, L'amère à boire, located in the heart of the Latin Quarter, is the only craft brewery in Quebec that specializes in lagers offering a dozen varieties, and some very beautiful ales. The menu generally offers from eight to ten beers on tap as well as two absolutely exceptional beers on cask. These cask beers are called "real ale" in England because they are neither filtered, nor pasteurized, nor pushed by carbon dioxide during the service. This "non-intervention" makes it such that these beers preserve all of their flavours and gives them a mouthfeel so smooth that you will have the

feeling of drinking a cloud. You can recognize these beers by the "beer engine", a long vertical lever that the barman must pump to get the invaluable liquid.

If my visits to L'amère à boire are always unbelievable it's because the owner and brewer Grégoire Roussel has conceived an unbelievable menu. Just imagine: among the regulars there's always L'amère à boire (pale ale) and the Boucanier (porter) served on cask, in addition to the Hefe Weizen Naturtrüb (blanche), Cernà Hora (pilsener), Fin de Siècle (special ale), and Stout Impériale. Besides these gems we can also find from 2 to 4 semi-regular beers (Celebratus, Drak, Vollbier, Montréal Hell, Odense Porter, Kozak) or seasonals (Bockbier, Bière de Mars, Maibock, Oktoberfest, L'amère Noël). To facilitate your visit the brewery also offers small tasting glasses to sample any or all of the beers on tap.

Another reason why my visits are unbelievable it's the high quality of the cuisine which is efficiently managed by the other owner and glutton René Guindon. Everyday from 4:30pm to 11pm the kitchen offers burgers, nachos, gravlax, spanakopitas, lamb keftas, Welsh rarebits and succulent chipotle quesadillas. Occasionally, you will also find Bhaji onions, a sublime Kielbasa and Portobello salad, pierogies, a judiciously seasoned chili, fish & chips, the excellent General Tao chicken, a sausage platter, superb skewers of red curry beef of refined and melodious flavours, rabbit confit, and a spectacular and astounding sauerkraut that melts in your mouth and makes me melt into tears. Very moving! And as if it wasn't enough la maison finishes us off with an "inebriating" crème brûlée à la Stout Impérial. This menu is also available Tuesday to Friday from 12pm to 2:30pm. This exceptional cuisine could well be the best of all of the Québec's brewpubs.

The Sponge Awards

This section aims at honouring the beers which have received my perfect score of 4 sponges at least once during my last 4 visits at that brewery. However the score also takes into account all of the tastings of these same beers during these last 4 visits.

Stout Impérial   4 (3K)

Beautiful flavours of roasted barley, with notes of vanilla, chocolate, coffee, and hazelnut, offering a wine-like finish, and a bitterness which is quite incredible! On occasion one can also distinguish red berries and crème brûlée flavours... One can imagine it au stout... this crème brûlée! Available regularly.

Boucanier   DDG520 (1K)   4 (3K)

A cask-conditioned porter, this Buccaneer has a splendid texture with superb cacao powder and vanilla flavours, as well as some beautiful smokey notes and an astounding bitterness. Quite overwhelming! Available regularly.

Fin de Siècle   4 (3K)

A strong ale (6%) in constant evolution, the End of the Century offers nice citrus fruits flavours on a beautiful alcoholic warmth. A frank and sharp taste. Available regularly.

Cernà Hora   4 (3K)

This Pilsener of Czech inspiration is a perfect marriage of butterscotch and bitterness. This beer is also served at the Czech Consulate in Montreal.

L'amère à boire   DDG520 (1K)   4 (3K)

A cask-conditioned pale ale, this astounding Bitter to drink explodes with flavours of citrus fruits, primarily apricots, and offers a beautiful bitterness and an absolutely splendid texture. The name L'amère à boire actually comes from the expression La mer à boire which means "a long and difficult task". This beer is available regularly.

Montréal Hell   4 (3K)

An Helles offering a superb bitterness accompanied by beautiful notes of caramel and apricots. Available semi-regularly.

Stout Impérial   image02333 (1K)   4 (3K)

The bottled version, tasted at the 10th Anniversary party, was very smokey and presented hints of red berries and a beautiful bitterness.

Vollbier   4 (3K)

Beautiful butterscotch flavours accompanied by fine herbal hops.
