My very first visit to Bedondaine & Bedons Ronds was a real knock-out! Located 32km south of Montreal, near the very beautiful Chambly basin, this brewpub, open since April 10th 2005, charmed me from the very first glance with its facade coming right out of a Marcel Carné movie which seemed to tell me: "Atmosphère! Atmosphère! Est-ce que j'ai une gueule d'atmosphère?". And me to answer: "T'as de belles fenêtres, tu sais!". Once inside I was subjugated by all these beer articles exposed all over the tasting room, which proves to be a true haven of peace since it stresses comfort with its fabulous armchairs and its divine couches. In addition to the tasting room 94 places, there is a small private living room which can accomodate fourteen persons for the tenure of an event, a meeting, or an activity. In summer there is a pretty terrasse for those who prefer this type of "atmosphere"...

And who do you think is responsible for this knock-out? None other that owner and brewer Nicolas Bourgault (shown here proudly holding a beautiful sampler tray), better known by the pseudonym of Bedondaine, a real passionate who concocted about 25 recipes mainly of British inspiration (though some of them seem to be of supernatural inspiration...), of which eleven are generally on tap. Among the regulars you'll find a weizen, a blonde, a rousse, a brown and two noires, in addition to a delicious beer made with mint leaves and bays of juniper called Mentheuse, a beer with wild flowers honey, coriander and orange peel called l'Ensorceleuse, and a very hoppy Extra Bitter with its 200 IBU's called l'Amère Veilleuse. To these nine regulars two seasonal beers are added among which you could find La Pockée, a blueberry beer, La Tarte, a true liquid apple pie, and Reyne descosse, a famous Scotch Ale which made a sensation with the Bilboquet clientele back when Nicolas was brewing at this Saint-Hyacinthe institution. Nicolas' beers are so exquisite that this is the way you should look like after your visit:

The brewery also offers a very beautiful sampler tray for a true festival of flavours, served by a charming personnel.

For the bedons ronds (round bellies), the kitchen proposes two grilled french baguette sandwiches (ham and cheese, or artichoke hearts), as well as a terrine platter, the always inevitable nachos and a sublime Wurst Sandwich with Noix de Marmotte beer Sauerkraut. In the snacks category we can also find Greek Kalamata Olives, Gendarme Sausages, and Tapenade on a crust...What? No chocolate potatoes? Surely an oversight!

A visit to Chambly would not be complete without a stroll in the Frehel Park, along the Chambly basin, or on the bicycle path skirting the canal, or on the grounds of Fort Chambly which is home of Festival Bières & Saveurs (Beer & Flavour Fest) every Labour Day weekend.

For those who travel by bus I must acknowledge that the transporter's website is so pit-pit-pit-pitiful that its webmaster deserve to be thrown in the rapids of the Richelieu River. Take a look at this horror (http://www.tec.amt.qc.ca/itec/pa1/circuits/citcrc_lcirc.htm) and try to find your way. So I've made for you these user-friendly tables:

The Sponge Awards

This section aims at honouring the beers which have received my perfect score of four sponges at least once during my last four visits at that brewery. However the score also takes into account all of the tastings of these same beers during these last four visits.

Bariteau   4 (3K)

This comfortable rousse presents much assertiveness with its good marriage of hops, caramel and hazelnuts. A Bedondaine classic!

Amère Veilleuse   4 (3K)

Beautiful flavours of hop flowers, butter, and almonds in this Marvelous Bitter with its 200 IBUs of bitterness.

Bedon   4 (3K)

The Belly is a very smooth stout which offers very beautiful hops.

Dernière Brosse   4 (3K)

The Last Binge is a chocolatey and very hoppy stout.

Mentheuse   4 (3K)

Here's an illustration of the genius of Nicolas Bourgault. Who would have thought that a beer with mint leaves and bays of juniper would be so good and so smooth? A beer which would only be a "gadget" in the hands of any other brewer. Of supernatural inspiration!

Ensorceleuse   4 (3K)

Here's another illustration of the genius of Nicolas Bourgault. Who would have thought that a beer with wild flowers' honey, coriander and orange peel could be so astounding with its exquisite caramel finale and its perfume which would make Mr Dior extremely envious? This bewitching beer would only be a "gadget" in the hands of any other brewer, proof that we are dealing with an exceptional brewer. Of supernatural inspiration!

Reyne descosse   4 (3K)

One of Bedondaine's most famous beers this 12-month old Scotch Ale, at 9% abv, offers caramel and hazelnut flavours on a beautiful alcoholic warmth. This Queen of Scotland is a winter seasonal.

Noix de Marmotte   3_et_demi (3K)harpon1 (1K)  4 (3K)

At times, the Groundhog’s Nut feels like a Brown Ale with its caramel and alcohol flavours; at other times it is more like a German Altbier with its very hoppy and nutty flavours.

Ange-Gardien   3_et_demi (3K)

A german-inspired wheat beer which offers beautiful banana and vanilla flavours.
